Anderson Basketball: Weekly Review (1/23-1/29)

The Anderson basketball team found great success in their most challenging week of basketball this season. It featured a game against Westlake last Tuesday and a game against Lake Travis this past Friday. The Trojans came out of the week with a 1-1 record, including a tough 55-58 loss to Westlake and a massive 43-37 upset win against Lake Travis. This great week of basketball could prove to be a huge turning point in the Trojans’ season.

Anderson’s first game of the week was an away matchup against a very good Westlake team. Westlake came into this game close behind leaders Lake Travis and Johnson in the district standings and looked to get a win against Anderson to hopefully catapult them atop the leaderboard. They may have come into this game with too much confidence, though, as the Trojans jumped out to a 21-14 lead by the end of the first quarter. Anderson shot 55.6% from beyond the ar this quarter earning 15 points on five made threes, allowing them to pull ahead early. The second quarter saw a swing in momentum, with the Chaparrals going on an 8-0 run to take a 22-21 lead with under four minutes to play before halftime. This run was caused by some costly Anderson turnovers ending in free possessions and easy fastbreak layups for Westlake. The momentum then switched again, led by two Bennett Blackerby threes, and the Trojans went on a run of their own to end the half up 33-30. Anderson had an excellent third quarter where they outscored Westlake 16-12 and had a seven-point 49-42 lead going into the game’s last eight minutes. Westlake played excellent defense in the fourth quarter, causing blocks and turnovers, and tied the game at 51 a piece with under four minutes to go. With about a minute left down one point, the Trojans could not score, and down three with under 15 seconds to go were not able to get a good shot off, ending the game in a 55-58 loss. Westlake’s Wonder Kahozi finished with a double-double scoring 33 points and racking up 14 rebounds. Although the Trojans were not able to close this game out, it showed they could compete with the best teams in district.

The Trojans played Lake Travis next in the biggest home game of the year. Lake Travis was on a 9-game winning streak and aimed to continue their dominance against Anderson. The Trojans played great defense and held the Cavaliers to almost 20 points under their season average, winning the game 43-37. Anderson showed the ability to close out tight games that they lacked against Westlake, which is a huge positive. This win should give the Trojans a huge confidence boost and will hopefully lead them to a successful end-of-season playoff push.
