It was a beautiful sunny day as the Anderson Trojan Track and Field squad competed at the Round Rock Invitational Saturday. An incredible three school records were broken.
The day started with a bang when two school records were broken before lunch. First off was the Girls’ 4×800 meter relay. Two freshmen, Caroline Talarcek and Emily Scholtz, combined with two seniors, Leah Heckmann and Faith Murphy, to 9:54.62, winning the meet and obliterating a school record by over 20 seconds that had stood for 21 years.
Just an hour later and not to be outdone, senior Zayden Sharp absolutely destroyed his own previous school record in the Long Jump of 23-0, leaping an incredible 25-4 on his first attempt to win the meet. Not only was his jump more than two feet longer than his record set just a year ago at the same meet, but he now holds the longest jump in the country.
Later in the day, Murphy again broke a school record, this time on her own. Usually a 400-meter and 800-meter runner, she took to the track in the 1600-meter run, finishing second in a time of 5:04.34, breaking a 10-year-old record by over 25 seconds.
On the Junior Varsity side, Clara Gustafson won the high jump with a height of 4-10. Izzy Bremer placed fourth in the 100m dash in 13.40, while Ariana Cruz also placed fourth in the 1600m run in a time of 6:14.32.
All three girls’ JV relays finished fourth as well. The team of Bremer, Gustafson, Ivory Brock, and Emma Williams in the 4x100m relay finished in 52.11. Brock and Gustafson then teamed with Noemi Greiner-Guzman and Naliyah Anderson in the 4x200m relay in a time of 1:53.89. Then Cruz teamed with Avery Riggsbee, Valeria Hernandez, and Carla Sanchez-Lopez in the 4x400m relay with a time of 4:42.15.
On the boys’ JV side, Kaleb Kurian placed third in the junior varsity high jump with a leap of 5-6.
At the Northwest Texan Invitational, Colby Huntress placed third in the 1000-meter run, joining several other elite athletes from across the state in an attempt to break the National High School Record. Huntress’s time of 2:27.35 is also the third-best time in the country this year and the sixth-fastest time over the past ten years.
The Trojans will return to the track next Friday at Baylor University in Waco for the Belinda Denman Invitational.
