Trojans Play Nail-Biter vs Westwood

After a hard-fought battle under the lights, the Anderson Trojans came up just short against Westwood in a nail-biting 2-1 loss. Despite the scoreboard, the Trojans showed heart, resilience, and flashes of brilliance, nearly clawing their way to a crucial non-district victory. The game started with Owen Thomas on the mound, setting the tone early. However, a couple of defensive miscues allowed Westwood to capitalize, plating two runs off a hit and an error. Despite the rough start, the Trojans didn’t let up. Enter Ben Waisman. The senior right-hander took over and completely shut down the Warriors’ offense. Waisman was nothing short of sensational, painting the corners and keeping Westwood hitters off balance with his devastating off-speed pitches. He racked up strikeouts through three dominant innings, giving Anderson every opportunity to claw back into the game. Even so, Westwood held onto their 2-0 lead until the top of the sixth, when the Trojans finally found life at the plate. James Cole Jr. delivered the biggest moment of the night, crushing an electrifying double into the left-center gap. The Anderson dugout erupted as the ball sailed past the fielders head, sending a runner racing home to cut the deficit to 2-1. With Cole Jr. standing on second and the momentum shifting, Anderson had a prime chance to tie the game.

Anderson got one last chance in the top of the seventh, and Cade Cazin made sure they had every opportunity to strike. Coming in to close the game, Cazin kept Westwood at zero with a strong finish, setting the stage for a dramatic final inning. The Trojans led off with Dominic Bellavia, who did his job by getting on base, followed by Max McCormick, who failed to lay down a bunt, resulting in the first out. JJ Velasquez stepped up, knowing the chances were dwindling, and looked for a way to extend the game. Even still, he struck out, leaving all the pressure on Darek Paiz. Paiz put up a great offensive battle, working the count to 3-2, but the pitcher delivered a perfect pitch to end the game. It was a heartbreaking loss for Anderson, but there’s no doubt they proved they can compete with anyone in the district. Waisman’s brilliant pitching, Cole Jr.’s electrifying double, and Cazin’s strong finish were all signs of what this team is capable of, and they’ll have plenty of chances to turn the tide in future matchups.

The Trojans won’t dwell on this one for long. They’re back in action on Thursday, looking to bounce back with a big win in their Corpus Christi Tournament.
