Monday night was an exciting one for Anderson Girls’ Soccer as they earned a 3-0 victory over the Stony Point Tigers behind a strong full-team effort. Gracie Ruthven scored twice and Jesicca Greenway potted a goal for the Trojans, while Evelyn Grossman and Haley Zator led a strong backline helping goalkeeper Kendall Meachum to a fifth straight shutout.
After the win, Anderson awaited reports on the finals of Tuesday night’s games to determine their second-round matchup. LEE high school out of San Antonio defeated Steele 2-0 solidifying themselves as the Trojans’ opponent tonight. The Volunteers finished the regular season 14-6-3 and 3rd in 6A district 27. They come into this game 4-1-0 in their last 5, their only loss coming 3-0 at the hands of SA Johnson who finished 16-0 in 6A-27. The only common opponent between the two teams this year was Austin High. LEE beat the Maroons 3-0 early in the year, while Anderson went 1-0-1 against them with a 1-1 tie in the first round of district play and a 5-0 win last Tuesday.
The Volunteers feature a pair of D1 commits in senior defender Kendall Jones and junior forward Addison Miller. The former anchors a strong defensive group for LEE that’s only allowed 25 goals all season and will head to Texas Tech next year, and the latter is a UTSA commit and the leading goal scorer for the Vols. If the Trojan’s backline can shut down Miller (and Jones), it’ll be tough for LEE to score and give Anderson a great chance to come out on top.
The Trojans and Volunteers play tonight at 7:30 out in Seguin at Texas Lutheran University, and there will be a sendoff at 4:10 PM today. All students are encouraged to attend the sendoff to support girls’ soccer and if you can make it, you should head out to Seguin for what should be a great game tonight.
