Through 24 games this season, Anderson girl’s basketball has faced much adversity in their move to 6A. Playing in this new district has created plenty of challenges for the team, but they continue to persevere through and fight hard every game. Led by sophomore guard Brooke Fuller, Anderson averages 27.8 points per game.
Anderson has a big game coming up this Friday against Akins. The last time the two teams met, Anderson won by a score of 40-33 behind a 20-point game from Fuller. Junior Ella Wilkins also grabbed double-digit rebounds against the Eagles. Freshman Cayla Mosby played stifling defense as she had 9 rebounds and 5 steals.
The Trojans have a great chance to get back in the win column against Akins but will need to play hard to do so. Here are my 3 keys for the game:
Get Brooke Fuller the Ball in Space: The Anderson offense runs best through Fuller and she can shoot at a high clip from beyond the arc. If she can get hot from 3-point range, the Trojans will be tough to stop. If Anderson can get Fuller open using off-ball screens on the wing, she’ll get plenty of open looks that will lead to important points for the Trojans.
Strong on the Boards: Anderson needs to out-rebound Akins on Friday. On offense, it can lead to easy second-chance buckets or more possessions for the Trojans. These points are crucial in close games, and often times the team with more of them wins. Defensively, Anderson needs to box out and limit the number of offensive boards the Eagles grab. Forcing them into one-shot possessions will limit their offensive output and provide Anderson with a chance to control the pace of the game. Sophomore Katya Veazey along with Wilkins and Mosby are key to making this happen.
Get Out in Transition: The Trojans swiped 9 steals against Akins in their last meeting and doing that again will be key. But in order to fully capitalize on those steals, Anderson needs to score off those turnovers. Getting out and running in transition on steals or fast breaks will allow the Trojans more open layups as well as the ability to pass around and find an open jump shot against a tired Akins defense.
The game on Friday is sure to be an exciting one, and if you want to attend, the game is at Akins High School. Location: 10701 S 1st St, Austin, TX 78748
