The Anderson men’s soccer team is coming off of a strong 2021/22 season, but with the recent shift from a 5A district to a 6A district, and the loss of 11 seniors, the Anderson Men’s soccer program is bound to face a more challenging season. The question is, will they be able to rise to the occasion?
In early December, Anderson’s varsity team faced off against two dominant 6A opponents. The team fell short against Round Rock but managed a 1-1 tie with Vandergrift. Although roughly half the team graduating has left some gaps, it has also created opportunities for underclassmen. Sophomore Luke Reuter and freshman Trevor Rener have stepped into more prominent roles on the team. Trevor scored the lone goal in the game versus Vandergrift.
The team attended a preseason tournament in the Georgetown area, where they went 0-2-1 (W-T-L) against all 5A teams. They tied Lovejoy High School and Eastview High School, but lost against Southwest High School in their last game.
They kicked off their district play with a game against Austin High on January 10th. Anderson walked into the second half up 4-2, with two PKs from junior and previous co-district MVP Jud Anderson. Those goals were paired with a goal from senior Gavin Shaw, and one from senior captain Ian Klumpen. In the second half, Austin High managed to score three goals, causing the Trojans to fall behind. The game ended with a 5-4 loss.
Later that week, on Friday the 13th, Anderson took the field for a friendly match against Crockett High School. One goal each from senior Charlie Cisneros, sophomore Luke Reuter, and senior Miles Metzger earned the Trojans a 3-0 win.
Anderson has some tough matchups ahead, including teams such as Lake Travis, the defending state champions. Despite a rocky start to the season, I believe the Anderson men’s soccer team will be able to compete with the district teams they are up against. There is diverse, committed talent on this young team with lots of potential. The mentality is there, but significant challenges await. Regardless, it should be an exciting season to watch.
