The Anderson girls’ track team made the most of their reclassification to 5A, dominating the District 24-5A Meet held Tuesday and Thursday at Burger Stadium. The Lady Trojans scored a commanding 174 points en route to the title.
The women were once again led by senior Faith Murphy, who captured individual titles in the 400-meter dash and 800-meter run and claimed second place in the 1600-meter run.
Freshman Izzy Bremer set a personal and Anderson season-best on her way to claiming the 200-meter dash in a time of 26.90. Bremer also set a new school record in the long jump, finishing third with a leap of 17-4.5.
Bremer also led the 4×100 Meter Relay team of Candice Alabi, Clara Gustafson, and Julyana Harris to a runner-up finish. She then paced the Trojans to a runner-up finish in the 4×200 Meter Relay with Alabi, Naliyah Anderson, and Harris, thus advancing to Area.
The 4×400 Meter Relay also advanced to Area with a runner-up finish. The team consisted of Bojana Rutkouszky, Gustafson, Leah Heckmann, and Emily Scholtz. Murphy should join this team at Area, giving them a boost in their push to make regionals.
In addition to her relay success, Clara Gustafson tied her personal best in the high jump, jumping 4’10” to capture the district crown. Gustafson also finished fourth in the 100m in 13.08, setting another personal best and qualifying for the area meet in both events. Both results were tops for any Trojan this season.
Paola Castro Castillo, a junior, won the Triple Jump with a leap of 34 feet, 11 inches. This was not only her personal best, but also a season-best for the Trojans.
A third freshman, Emily Scholtz, finished fifth in the 300-meter hurdles, however she did set a Trojan season best in the event.
The Trojan Boys finished second in the team results behind Bastrop and just ahead of LASA.
The Boys were led by junior Colby Huntress, who easily won the 800-meter and 1600-meter runs. Huntress also anchored the winning 4×400-meter relay, which clinched second place by virtue of finishing ahead of the Raptors. That winning 4×4 relay team consisted of Ben Elliott, Ben Jaggers, Tate Haines, and Huntress.
Jaggers, a state finalist in swimming, has transitioned well from the pool to the track, also capturing the district title in the 400-meter dash in a time of 51.24.
Senior Zayden Sharp did his usual thing, winning the Long Jump with a leap of 22-5.25 on Tuesday and the 100-meter dash in 10.68 Thursday afternoon. He also anchored the Boys’ 4×100-meter relay, which finished third despite a baton mishap. The bronze medal in the 4x100m Relay was won by Brady Foster, Yaheim Riley, Kyler Sharp, and Zayden.
The 4x200m Relay team of Zach Wallis, Yaheim Riley, Ben Hatcher, and Ben Elliott also placed third and qualified for Area.
Other Trojans advancing to the Area Meet next Wednesday in Georgetown are:
Elizabeth Tucker (third in 3200m), Caroline Talarcek (fourth in 3200m, third in 1600m), Candice Alabi (fourth in 200m), Kate Leakey (fourth in Discus), Sophia Truong (fourth in Pole Vault), Elise Keith (second in Shot Put), Julyana Harris (third in Triple Jump), Manny Garduno (third in 3200m), Brady Foster (third in 100m), Max Middleton (third in Discus), Ben Hatcher (second in Long Jump), Kyler Sharp (fourth in Long Jump) and Zac Cecalak (third in Shot Put).
