In the final tune-up of the season before district, several Anderson Trojans broke school records and Zayden Sharp won what may be the school’s first win at the historic Texas Relays held at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas.
In what may be a school first, senior Zayden Sharp won the Boys Long Jump with a jump of 23-6 ¼ Friday evening. Sharp is now undefeated in four meets this season, but this one was a bit more challenging.
After three rounds, Sharp was sitting in a tie for second place at 23-1 ¼. After advancing to the final 8, he then dropped into a tie for fourth in the fourth round. Sharp responded with what ended up being the championship-winning jump in the fifth round.
Earlier in the day, senior Faith Murphy broke her school record in the 1600m for a fourth straight time. The race began with a blistering pace, covering the first 400 meters in 1:10. Murphy settled in and finished in 4:55.46, dropping six and a half seconds off her school record.
Immediately following, junior Colby Huntress broke the school record in the Boys 1600m. Huntress finished fourth in 4:14.67, breaking 2024 graduate (and current University of Arkansas student athlete) Leo Spitzer’s record of 4:15.81.
Late on Friday evening the team of Ben Elliott, Ben Jaggers, Tate Haines and Huntress ran the 4x400m relay in a season best 3:27.17.
Saturday morning the action continued with the Boys 4x100m Relay. The team of Brady Foster, Yahiem Riley, Kyler Sharp and Zayden Sharp placed 16th in a time of 42.31, the second-fastest time in school history, just missing the time set earlier this season at the AISD Invitational.
The Trojans begin their championship season campaign next week at Burger Stadium with the 24-5A District Championships. Preliminary varsity rounds and sub-varsity events will be competed on Tuesday with finals Thursday.
