Anderson Girl’s Basketball Drops Tough One vs Akins, Faces Key Stretch as District Slate Heats Up

It’s been tough sledding for the Girl’s Basketball team so far this season, but they’ll have a chance to make a big statement over the next few weeks with games against Westlake, Lake Travis, and Del Valle coming up before Christmas. The Trojans (1-10) have dropped all 4 of their district contests so far, but they’ve played some stiff competition, as the four teams are a combined 10-4 so far in district play.

Last Friday, the Trojans narrowly lost to Akins on the road in a tough matchup. Point guard Brooke Fuller had a solid outing against the Eagles, finishing with a team-leading 9 points, a rebound, and a steal, but Anderson’s best player on Friday was junior forward Nonye Muoneme who came awfully close to her second double-double of the season. Muoneme scored 8 points and grabbed 10 boards, including 5 on the offensive glass, to lead the Trojans.

Sophomore forward Cayla Mosby also had a solid game on Friday, putting up 6 points, 7 rebounds, and a pair of steals in the loss. Along with Muoneme, she makes up a solid frontcourt which is probably this team’s biggest strength so far. The season is still young, but as the two continue to play alongside each other, they’ll only get better.

The Trojans are going to need to play their best ball if they’re going to compete against Westlake and Lake Travis, and that starts with limiting the turnovers. Anderson turned the ball over 34 times against Akins and the team is averaging 20 turnovers a game this season. If they can begin to take better care of the ball, they’re going to have a much better chance to win games and find success on the court.

Furthermore, going forward, the offensive focus needs to be on ball movement because, as of right now, the Trojans are averaging just 4 assists per game. Emphasizing making the extra pass to find an open shooter should also help improve the team’s shooting percentage in the coming weeks. Point guard Brooke Fuller does a good job running the offense, but she needs to find her forwards for more easy buckets while still looking for her own shot when it’s there.

Anderson has done a great job of rebounding so far this season, grabbing over 30 boards in 4 games this season including both of their most recent contests. The offensive glass in particular has been a strength for Coach Counter’s squad as they’ve finished with double-digit offensive boards against Akins, Johnson, and Rouse. Turning those offensive rebounds into easy second-chance buckets and the defensive ones into fast break opportunities is going to be vital to any upset bids these next two weeks. Anderson needs to get out and run in transition because it gives them the best chance to catch opposing teams off guard.

After back-to-back matchups against formidable teams in Westlake and LT, the Trojans will have a great chance to build confidence against a struggling Del Valle team. The Cardinals are 0-10 on the season and have been outscored by almost 30 points a game so far. If the Trojans lean on their stars in Fuller, Muoneme, and Mosby, they should beat Del Valle handily and have a chance against the former two squads. Remember, anything can happen if you’re able to hang around into the fourth quarter.
