Last year at the Del Valle Relays, class of 2022 graduate Liam Donohoe set a new Anderson record by running a 4:19.00 mile. This was a great time and smashed the long-standing previous record. Although Liam’s record was excellent, it seemed already in jeopardy by the end of the 2021-2022 track season. At the district meet, sophomore Leo Spitzer ran an outstanding mile, crossing the finish line with a time of 4:28.59. This is an excellent time for a sophomore, and Leo looked primed to break the record. This year at the Round Rock Invitational, Leo ran the first mile of his season. The meet featured a stacked field with many runners looking to break 4:20, perfect for Leo if he wanted to break the record. Coming through the opening half-mile, Leo was with the lead pack and on pace to have a chance to break Liam’s record. Turning the last bend and approaching the last 100 meters, Leo found an extra gear and flew past the rest of the field. He crossed the finish line in a blazing 4:17.12 smashing the previous record. Leo is only a junior and will no doubt break his record many times throughout the rest of his career, but his eyes are now set on the half-mile record. He is closing in on it and is one breakout race from becoming the mile-and-half-mile Anderson record holder.
