Anderson Softball: Varsity’s First Week of District Play

Lady Trojans Softball has kicked off their 6A season, playing some formidable opponents, with a current record 1-5; they defeated Stony Point 11-8. In the last week alone, varsity has faced Austin High, West, Liberty Hill, Burnet, and Stony Point.

The Austin High game proved to be a significant challenge for the Lady Trojans on Tuesday evening. Andranea Jackson tied it up at the bottom of the first inning, bringing the score to 1-1. Unfortunately for Anderson, the Maroons widened their lead, racking up 10 runs in the 3rd, with no answer from the Lady Trojans. The opposing pitcher did not allow many opportunities for Anderson to score, leading to just one run. Austin High scored another 2 runs by the end of the game, bringing the final score to 1-12.

This past Thursday, the softball team entered their second tournament of the season, playing West, a school that established dominance early over the Lady Trojans. With West scoring 3 runs in the first inning and 4 in the second, Anderson just could not keep up. Players April Cartwright and Leti Paiz tried to dig their team out of the hole, scoring multiple runs each, but the Lady Trojans unfortunately fell 6-11.

Later that day, Anderson faced Stony Point for their second game, and came out with a dub! With a single from Lila Harrell in the first, the Lady Trojans established their lead, widening that margin later in the game. Leti Paiz, Emily Castro, Bella Patterson, and Willa Glover were impact players during the second inning, where Anderson put a solid 7 runs on the board. Brooke Lonsdale pitched four innings, before April Cartwright took over for the 5th and final inning (due to the game being cut short as a result of time restrictions). April Cartwright, Andranea Jackson, and Willa Glover led the team with two hits each against Stony Point. The Lady Trojans fought hard, with a final score of 11-8.

Continuing with tournament play, the Lady Trojans met the Liberty Hill Panthers, yet another challenging opponent. Andranea Jackson hit an over-the-fence homer early in the first inning, putting two runs on the board for Anderson as Leti Paiz also crossed home. Liberty Hill tied it up at the bottom of the first, before pulling away later in the game. The Lady Trojans had a difficult time defensively, ultimately leading to their 2-13 loss.

Friday evening had the softball team back on the field, against the Burnet Dawgs. Andranea Jackson hit a single in the first inning, and Lila Harrell had two hits at two bats, although this was not enough to put any runs on the board for Anderson. The Lady Trojans fell to the Dawgs 0-10.

Matched up against Stony Point once again, Anderson played their last game of the three-day tournament. Pitcher Leti Paiz allowed 5 runs during the first inning for the Tigers, but the Lady Trojans were unable to score until the bottom of the second. Bella Patterson crossed home plate after the opposing pitcher walked Brooke Lonsdale. Anderson put up 4 runs at the bottom of the third, scored by Emily Castro, Willa Glover, Olivia Jestice, and Bella Patterson. The team lost to Stony Point 5-19 to close out the tournament.

Anderson has already met some fierce competition in their first week of district play, and it’s clear that their 6A season will be exciting. The Trojans have a game tonight versus Bowie at Noack, so come out and show some support!
