The Lady Trojan softball team has grown exponentially since last year. During the 2021-2022 season, there were barely enough players to make a JV team; however, the tryout turnout was much better this year, and Anderson is able to have a good size JV team and a solid Varsity. This expansion of the program will hopefully lead to more student support for the Trojan teams, as a student section can make all the difference in terms of energy.
A few weekends ago, players and their parents attended several work days in order to clean up the field so that it can be used for practice. They pulled weeds, rewired the golf cart, organized the equipment shed, and fixed the fence so they can set themselves up for a successful season. The work was long and exhausting, but it showed the commitment of the Lady Trojans and their parents to the softball program. Special thanks to Eddie Joseph who really showed up for the team and put in extra work to make the fields the best they can be.
Preseason scrimmages started last week, and the teams have been figuring out their plan to tackle the upcoming 6A season. With so many new players (some even in their first year of playing softball), many have tried out new positions before settling on the one they will fill for district play. Not only does this switching positions allow players to zero in on what they are best at, but it also brings depth to the bench, should something happen to the person who normally fills that role.
This past Tuesday, the Lady Trojans entered district play versus Austin High. JV took home a win against Austin High, with a final score of 8-6. Taylor Coggin had an exceptionally good game, hitting 2 for 3 at the plate, and pitching 7 strikeouts versus the Maroons. Catcher Brianna Meza also was a critical player with a tag out at home plate, preventing Austin High from making the score 8-7. Finally, second-year player Kylie Grahmann hit a grand slam to conclude the game and bring home the Trojan victory, setting the JV record 1-0. Unfortunately, Varsity fell to the Austin High Maroons 1-13, who are a team to watch during the season. This loss puts Varsity in 6th place in district play, at the beginning of what promises to be an exciting season.
