The big ice storm last week affected many in the Austin area. Downed trees, icy roads, and broken power lines littered central texas. Days of ice and freezing rain wreaked havoc throughout our community. Tens of thousands in Austin lost power, many roads and driveways were blocked, and a major cleanup was in order from the local residents.
While many people worked to clear their own houses and streets, quite a few people aren’t able to do this. Many elderly folks in the neighborhood needed help, and that’s where the Trojans came in.
Coach Hatcher organized an effort to truly help those in need in our community. The players that were able to attend split into five groups, and each helped clean up several areas around the neighborhood. Over 30 Anderson players showed up to support a community that supports them so heavily. This moving story was even picked up by local NBC outlet KXAN.
Smaller efforts began Thursday, but the main organized event was Saturday. The elderly in Northwest Hills certainly appreciated the help. Marsha Gray, grandmother of Trojan star Brady Gephart was one of many who helped out in our community. “My husband and I, there’s no way we could have cleaned this out,” Gray said of her tree-littered lawn. “It’s really hard to get anybody out to help us so we so much appreciate the kids, the football team, and the school.”
This goes to show just how much the football team’s effort means to the community. When our neighbors needed it most, the team stepped up off the field. “Really coming together as a family is really huge in these moments where the community needs you the most,” Gephart said about giving back with the team.
While some were helping out the elderly, other players were cleaning up around local school Doss Elementary. This means a lot to some of the guys as many of them attended Doss or neighboring Murchison Middle School. Seeing the school covered in trees is not a joyful sight to see, as Junior Dayden Williams said “It sucks to see your neighborhood get torn apart, but it’s always good to help.”
As fun as they are to watch on the field, off the field, is where this team really shines. Players and coaches alike truly care about our community, and that’s as important as any game the Trojans play.
