This weekend, the Trojans’ historic season continued as a record-setting three athletes qualified for the UIL Track and Field State Championships.
Leading the way with two regional championship victories on Saturday was Colby Huntress, who captured the Boys 800 Meter and 1600 Meter titles. Huntress ran a season-best 1:53.58 to win the 800m run. Two hours later, he won the 1600m run in a time of 4:18.95. Both races were fast but tactical as the athletes ran for time, not placement. In his races, Huntress sat behind the leaders, ultimately using his speed to make a move on the back stretch. From there, it was just a matter of getting to the finish line.
On Saturday morning, it was the Sharp Show, with brothers Zayden and Kyler representing the Blue and Gold. Zayden, a senior, won the event in dominating fashion over a high-quality field. His first jump of 23 feet, 8.5 inches would’ve been good enough to win; however, he unleashed a leap of 24 feet, 2.25 inches on his second jump, taking the lead over the field by almost a foot and putting first place well out of reach for the rest of the athletes. He passed his remaining jumps.
Zayden’s brother, Kyler, improved his own freshman record in the long jump with a personal best of 22 feet, 2.5 inches on his third jump to make the final and eventually finish seventh.
By virtue of the three wins on the boys’ side, Colby and Zayden put together 30 points, vaulting the Trojans into seventh place in the team results.
Faith Murphy will return to State, but this time in two events. The senior finished second in both the 800m and 1600m runs, running 2:10.98 in the 800m and 5:01.97 in the 1600m.
The UIL Track and Field State Championships will be held on Friday, May 2, at Mike A. Myers Track & Soccer Stadium at the University of Texas.
