Championship Season continued for the Anderson Trojan Track and Field Team this week as they competed at the 5A District 23-24 Area Meet Wednesday at Georgetown East View High School with a chance to qualify for the Regional Meet on the line.
The morning began with field events and was highlighted by the Men’s Long Jump, where the Sharp brothers took center stage. Senior Zayden Sharp continued his dominance in the event, jumping 23-1 for his sixth straight win in the Long Jump this season. Freshman Kyler Sharp leaped a career-best 22-0.5 to place second and also earned a spot in the regional finals. Ben Hatcher, a junior, rounded out the Trojans in the event, jumping 21-3.25 for a sixth-place finish.
Junior Max Middleton placed fourth in the Discus, setting a personal best and throwing 137-10 to qualify for the Regional Championships. It was also a season best for the squad, as Max inches closer to his brother Jack’s school record in the event.
Julyana Harris rounded out the field event qualifiers to Regionals with a fourth-place finish in the triple jump. The sophomore had an incredible personal best leap of 36-6, just off the school record of 37-1 set by Jacqueline Yanez in 2015. Paola Castro Castillo, a junior, also jumped well, leaping 35-11.5 for a fifth-place finish and a new personal best by a foot.
In the evening, the focus moved to the track, where junior Colby Huntress dominated the competition in both the 800m and 1600m runs. Huntress cruised to wins in both events, then anchored the 4×400-Meter Relay squad, eking out a fourth-place finish over Bastrop in the final event of the evening. The team of freshman Ben Elliott, sophomore Ben Jaggers, junior Tate Haines, and Huntress moves on to the Regional Meet next weekend.
Faith Murphy continued her fantastic senior season, qualifying for three individual events at Regionals, winning the 800m run, then finishing second in the 1600m and third in the 400m.
Lastly, both the men’s and women’s 4x100m-Relat Teams advanced to Regionals with fourth-place finishes at the Area Meet. The women’s team consisted of Izzy Bremer, Candice Alabi, Clara Gustafson, and Julyana Harris. The boys’ team consisted of Brady Foster, Yaheim Riley, and the Sharps, Kyler and Zayden.
Several other notable results, despite not qualifying for the Regional Meet, included freshman Clara Gustafson, who set a Trojan season and individual personal best of 13.06 in the 100m, junior Kate Leakey, who finished fifth in the Discus with a throw of 90-3, setting a Trojan season and individual personal best, and Breylinn Snyder, who finished sixth in the Pole Vault (8-0) with a Trojan season and individual personal best.
The 5A Region 3 Track and Field Championships will be held April 18-19 at Challenger Stadium in Webster, Texas.
