Anderson Sports Med: National Athletic Trainers Month + Sports Med Olympics

The Anderson sports med program is an integral part of Trojan athletics, helping athletes both on and off the field. From wrapping injuries and providing ice, to handing out water bottles, these trainers do it all.

Every March, the National Athletic Trainers’ Association recognizes all of the sports medicine trainers that do so much for athletes. The US leads the world with its number of Olympic medals (2,633) from the athletes’ success, due to the hard work and time their trainers put in. As of the year 2000, the Association decided to honor these committed people, deeming March National Athletic Trainers’ Month. Anderson partakes in this month of celebration, showing gratitude for all of the sports med students and coaches who keep Trojan athletes healthy.

To celebrate this month, Georgetown High School hosted the Student Athletic Trainer Olympics, which consisted of a wide variety of games including crutch relays, tape toss, and water cooler carrying competitions. Each year, the Trojan sports med trainers participate in the Olympics, using skills they have learned throughout the program. Overall, Anderson came 9th out of 25 teams from the area, this year. Junior Eli Marlowe came second in the BlazePod challenge, an event including different colored lights and cones. Senior Kailey Wewe placed fourth in the ankle taping challenge, where she put all of her sports med knowledge to use.

The Sports Med Olympics was an amazing opportunity to meet like-minded students from other schools in the Austin area. It encouraged friendly competition and camaraderie as students and trainers celebrated National Athletic Trainers’ Month.
